How to Get to Sayulita Mexico

Sayulita, Mexico may be the ideal destination for those looking to escape the over-crowded beaches of Puerto Vallarta, but before you can enjoy the quietness of this coastal destination, you must get there! Because of its remote location, this can be a challenge if you do not have good directions before you go.

Getting to Sayulita from Puerto Vallarta

If you arrive in Mexico via the Puerto Vallarta International Airport, grab a bus or rent a car and head north on Mexican Highway 200. You will be following signs to Tepic and Compestela. The road is a four-lane highway through the town of Bucarias and until it reaches Punta Mita. When you reach Punta Mita, veer left. This will take you to a military inspection point. This is nothing to fear, but you need to pass through the inspection point in order to reach the village.

At this point the road turns to two lanes and gets quite windy. You will travel over a small mountain across switchbacks, so go slowly and watch for animals around each corner. After you pass San Ignacio, watch for the sign for Sayulita. Once you turn off of the main road, you will travel just three kilometers to reach the town plaza.

Getting to Sayulita from Guadalajara

If your travels are based in Gudalajara and you wish to spend a day or two in Sayulita, head west on the highway towards Tequila. After about two hours, depending on traffic, you will see the turnoff for Compestela. This will take you to Mexican Highway 200, which becomes very windy as it nears Las Varas. Once you reach Las Varas, continue for another 45 minutes and you will find yourself in Sayulita. The way is fairly well marked, so you should have no trouble finding it.
